Kennedy is cutting cookies... little round ones...

And Bailey wanted to cut a few that were shaped like little cats...
Kennedy is waiting to roll out more dough...
The girls use our plastic cookie cutters in their toy kitchen so that is their permanent storage place. All the girls had gone to their kitchen box to search for those cutters and Addison got distracted and decided to sit in the box and play while we cut the first batch of cookies in the kitchen. :)
Addison joined us in the kitchen just as we were about to put the first batch into the oven. The younger girls are huddled up in the "Oven Spot".

The "Oven Spot" is something that I came up with when Bailey was wee little. All the girls have always been in the kitchen cooking and baking with me. I want them to be safe when the oven is opened so I designate a precise place in the kitchen that I can see from the oven. Then, I know they are far from danger of the oven and they can still see what is going in or coming out of the oven. When I call out "OVEN SPOT", they all go running. Logan knew about the oven spot as well; Sadie doesn't know yet. :)
(By the way, I do not store my eggs on the floor, just in case someone was wondering. We were just getting ready to cut those cartons up so that we could turn them into caterpillars while our cookies were baking.)
***** So...I was doing some experimenting with this recipe. Mother called me to get this recipe and ask me if it could be prepared and baked within a particular time allotment (she is doing a project with a group of children). It has been about 10 years since I prepared these cookies so I needed to make sure that I could adjust the recipe and/or the cook temperature and/or the cooking time so that these cookies would work for Mother's project.
The first batch turned out a bit too thick but the second batch was just perfect.
.....
I cannot tell you exactly how they tasted but....

Sadie thought that the homemade dog cookies were pretty yummy.
She even stopped mid-cookie (see it hanging out of the side of her mouth?) to smile for us.
:)
The cookies are really easy and quite inexpensive.
When we make homemade people cookies here, we make several batches and then freeze the dough in rolls (like you can buy at the grocery store). That way we can eat homemade cookies every night of the week if we want to! :)
These dog cookies need to be rolled out to paper-thin so this single recipe will make dozens of dog cookies. I opted to fill a small container for her and freeze the rest of the dough like we do our cookies.
Here is the recipe if you are interested in giving it a whirl:
2 1/2 cups wheat flour (I suspect they would be fine made with white flour as well.)
1/4 cup oats
1/2 cup powdered milk
2 teaspoons salt
6 tablespoons butter, melted
1 egg, beaten
12 tablespoons warm water
++ flavoring ingredient
~~
++ The flavoring ingredient can be whatever you want it to be. This time we used 1 teaspoon of garlic. You can use 1/4 cup of Parmesan cheese. Try 1 tablespoon of brown sugar and a few shakes of cinnamon. A 1/4 cup of peanut butter would be good. You could also make the batch WITHOUT the flavoring ingredient and then split the dough and add a different flavor to each portion.
Mix all ingredients until a typical thick cookie-dough-like consistency.
Roll the dough to about 1/4 inch and cut into desired shapes (it is really easiest to just use a small circle; we used one of the little medicine cups that comes with liquid children's medications).
Once shape is cut, roll the shape to about twice its size and place on a cookie sheet.
Bake at 350 for about 13-15 minutes. They should be slightly soft still when you remove them from the oven. Take the cookies off the sheet after about three minutes and they will get crunchy as they cool.
** Do not try to roll the dough initially to the approximate 1/8 inch. It is too sticky and difficult to manage from that consistency with the cookie cutters.
*** You can bake them at 400 for about 9-10 minutes to shorten the baking time if needed. No matter the temp, stay close to your oven for the first batch and start checking them at eight minutes. If you oven temperature is off, they can get too done very quickly since they are so thin.
***** After I had this batch ready to roll out, it occurred to me that it would have been good to use chicken or beef broth instead of water. I think I will try that next time. :)
